And here’s last week’s AVCX THEMELESS #4. Subscribe here. We’ll catch up on this week’s soon.
“AVCX Themeless #4”
Constructor: Kameron Austin Collins
Ben: This is the first AV Club puzzle by KAC, and appropriately enough, it’s a themeless. If I’m remembering correctly, he made the very first AVCX Themeless as well. At only 66 words, this wouldn’t be terribly out of place in his HIGH:low series, either.
I found this puzzle tough, to the point I wondered if I’d be able to finish it. BEE BEARD (34D: Face mask at a sideshow) is a weird but fun entry — but it crosses FARAD (56A: Leyden jar capacitance unit — never heard of it), ADZES and TRACE with a hard clue (59A: Follow). Throw in proper name games with 33A: Curry is the toast of it (NBA) and 33D: Gross employer (NPR) and I had a heck of a time with the SW. The NE was also hard.
There is a lot of good stuff here, as you’d expect from Kameron. IN DUE COURSE (6D: When you’d expect) and EGGNOG LATTE run right through triple stacks of 9’s, with DIET PILL (5D: Secret behind the shed?) and GREETERS (37D: Shirtless Abercrombie & Fitch employees, once) alongside for good measure. Very impressive construction. A little glue here and there, but enough good stuff to make up for it I’d say.
Favourite clue — 60A: They’re a little elementary? for NEUTRINOS. Also really liked the ALPHA DOG / SLAM POET pairing.
Tough but satisfying. If you’re doing one crossword a week, this should be it.
